About the Role 

StormGeo is at the forefront of delivering cutting-edge weather and ocean intelligence solutions. We are building a next-generation high-performance geospatial mapping system to visualize and interact with complex data efficiently. We are looking for a skilled Senior GIS & Mapping System Engineer to develop this solution and ensure seamless integration, scalability, and performance.

📍The location for this position will be Bergen or Oslo, Norway.

Main responsibilities

As part of our team, you will:

  • Develop scalable mapping systems that deliver high-performance vector, raster and data tiles, geojson etc.).
  • Design and implement systems capable of handling complex geospatial point and gridded data, including 3D oceanic and atmospheric levels.
  • Integrate ensemble forecast data, effectively handling four-dimensional geospatial visualization.
  • Ensure compatibility with existing GIS solutions including: ESRI technologies, GeoServer, and OGC standards (particularly WMS), making the systems accessible across different platforms.
  • Architect, design, and support APIs development, enabling seamless integration and efficient geospatial data consumption.
  • Implement styling and visualization tools for representing geospatial data
  • Work with diverse geospatial data formats such as GRIB, NetCDF, GeoTiff, ShapeFiles, GeoJSON, and more.
  • Optimize systems to support high-frequency data updates, ranging from minutes to daily intervals.
  • Design the infrastructure to support future scalability, accommodating increased spatial and temporal resolution as well as new user requirements.

What We’re Looking For

  • Solid experience with mapping systems, geospatial data visualization, and handling large-scale 3D/4D datasets.
  • Expertise in delivering high-frequency geospatial content (data, images, raster/vector tiles) and operating GeoServer or ESRI-based services in production.
  • Strong knowledge of OGC standards (WMS, WFS, WMTS) and geospatial formats such as GRIB, NetCDF, GeoTIFF, ShapeFiles, and GeoJSON.
  • Experience with Linux systems, PostgreSQL/PostGIS (including schema design and performance tuning), and performance optimization of geospatial services.
  • Proficient in programming (Python, C++, C#, or similar) and building reliable, observable systems with logging, monitoring, and failure handling.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based and distributed computing solutions and real-time/high-frequency data workflows.
